El Nido is also home to five endemic species of mammals
one hundred fourteen species of birds, forty-five genera
of corals, nearly two hundred kinds of fish, and vast tracts
of tropical rainforest.  This unique and rich biodiversity has
earned El Nido its own place in conservation. In 1998,
El Nido, along with the neighboring municipality of Taytay,
was declared a Managed Resource Protected Area, marked
by law as a special zone for conservation efforts, in an
effort to protect what is considered by many conservationists
to be the Philippines' last ecological frontier.
